WEM 2025 - Triumph of the youth

Things are looking up again! After some disappointing turnout numbers in recent years, the 23rd edition of our traditional rapid chess tournament saw an impressive 55 participants. Our thanks go to the Main-Taunus Chess Association, which chose to designate our tournament as this year’s rapid chess championship — a decision that certainly played a key role in the encouraging rise in attendance. The tournament was won by a junior player, Daniel Elias Ochs, while Thomas Schlapp — one of our strongest, if not our strongest, rapid chess players — secured the MTS championship title.

Early on, though, it looked like Hendrik Zimmermann was going to run away with it. With a perfect 6 points from his first 6 games, he was already pulling away from the field. But then, with only one draw in the final three rounds, he slipped back to 7th place and had to cede the MTS title to his clubmate Thomas Schlapp.

The other home-team players were also showing good form. Special mention goes to our former chairman, Walter Gräbner, who finished in 8th place with 6.5 points, taking both the senior prize and the top spot in his rating class. Rounding out the quartet in positions 6 through 9 was Gerd Graf, helping the hosts take home the team prize as well.

At the top of the standings, though, youth clearly had the upper hand. Behind tournament winner Daniel Elias Ochs from SV 1885 Wiesbaden, it was the experienced Hans-Henning Kopp from SV Oberursel who crossed the finish line in second. But right after him came two more juniors: Tymur Musieenko (SV 1885 Wiesbaden) and Bayastan Sydykov (SK 1858 Gießen), finishing third and fourth respectively. Last year’s winner Sydykov had to settle for the prize for best junior this time around, due to an inferior tiebreak score.

The special prizes were awarded to:

  • Best Junior: Bayastan Sydykov (SK 1858 Gießen)
  • Best Female: Leonie Rotärmel (SK Bad Homburg)
  • Best Senior: Bernd Goeke (SG Bensheim 1931)
  • DWZ 1999-1750: Walter Gräbner (SC 1961 König Nied)
  • DWZ 1749-1500: Joan Kun (SV Bodenheim)
  • DWZ 1499-1: Oleksandr Demenko (SK 1858 Gießen)
  • Best Team: Thomas Schlapp, Hendrik Zimmermann, Walter Gräbner, Gerd Graf (SC 1961 König Nied)
  • MTS Rapid Chess Champion: Thomas Schlapp (SC 1961 König Nied)
