Nied 1 loses 3.5:4.5 to Dettingen in return to Hessenliga

The unexpected excursion to the Oberliga lasted four years. Now, after having been relegated, the first team had to face the daily grind of the Hessenliga again with an away match in the Bavarian town of Dettingen.

Against the strong Dettingen, Nied had to replace their two starters Oliver and Sven due to their being on vacation. Not just because of this but also because of the loss of players before the start of the season, Dettingen had to be regarded as the favourites.

Peter was able to quickly exchange almost all minor pieces against his much stronger rated opponent, who therefore agreed to an early draw. However, by that time several boards were already looking promising for Dettingen. On top of that, Hendrik lost after having missed a zwischenzug, which prompted his immediate resignation.

The games at the remaining six boards surprisingly ended all within a short period around the first time control.

Thomas had not been able to save his position after the loss of a pawn. Not so Christof, who managed to scrape through to draw despite having been two pawns down. Tomislav had a quite decent position when he agreed to his opponent's draw offer because of time trouble. Daniel's opponent stayed on top of a tactical scramble and with this secured the match victory for Dettingen.

Afterwards, Patrick won his game from being two pawns down, but having felt comfortable with his position throughout the game. Gerd also won by means of a nice positional pawn sacrifice on the queenside, contributing the best played game of the first team on that Sunday.

In retrospect, the final result of 3.5 to 4.5 was closer than the match actually was. The first team is facing a difficult season and will have to keep an eye on the relegation battle rather than compete for promotion. On October 27th the league will continue with an away match at Frankfurter TV - another strong team in a strong league.

Nied 1 hits table bottom

The prediction that the first team was going to have a difficult time in the Hessenliga as well unfortunately seems to prove true. In the derby against Frankfurter TV, we again, as already in the first round, had to admit a narrow defeat.

Quite early it emerged that we were playing a losing match, as Thomas committed a wrong decision in a rare variation at move 6 already. Instead of sacrificing a pawn for very good compensation, he decided to go for a very passive position. Another mistake at move 9 then virtually decided the game. Even though he continued to offer brave resistance, he was not able to avoid the inevitable defeat.

Patrick as well faced strong pressure on the queenside early into the game. After an enemy knight managed to invade at c6 unhindered, his position collapsed. Christof and his opponent keenly exchanged pieces, followed by a draw agreement in a symmetrical position with even material. The game between Daniel and Ingo Rutkowski as well ended in a draw. The two players had already played a very similar game in the Oberliga two years ago - good job by Daniel to revisit that game again on his way to the venue!

About Hendrik's game I cannot really tell a lot. During the middle game it appeared to be difficult for him to find a good plan. Then, after a piece sacrifice by his opponent, his king had to leave his castle in a hurry and appeared to have died from exhaustion just a little later.

Oliver was peddling an extra pawn for a long time and seemed to have good winning chances. However, during the transition to the endgame he unfortunately lost his extra pawn - draw as well. Only towards the end of the match did we eventually score some points.

Our new member Tomislav managed to win somehow from a quite barricaded position. Likely he was aided in this endeavour by his pair of knights. I can't really say for sure, though, as I had to concentrate on my own game against Murat Diyap, who used to be one of my students in our juniors' group a long time ago. In an endgame with two bishops, rook and four pawns against two rooks and five pawns I eventually managed to prevail. However, at that time that win didn't add up to more than just a cosmetical correction of the match result.

This leaves the hope that we, like a high jumper at his third attempt, are going to finally clear the bar in the upcoming third round - our journey remains exciting.

Nied 1 eke out two points against Griesheim 2

Griesheim 2 withdrew their team from the Oberliga and had hoped that Nied would secure the spot freed by the withdrawal. However, Nied lost their final two matches while Medizin Erfurt won points off Griesheim - of all things - enabling them to reach the safe haven. But enough of that Oberliga nostalgia. We are now three matches into the Hessenliga - after all a third of the season - and at the latest with these two points Nied have finally arrived in the Hessenliga.

Surprisingly Griesheim decided to switch their top boards, such that Daniel had to take on Bogdan Grabarczyk, the highest rated player of the league. After two hours Daniel offered a draw from a position of strength, which was immediately accepted.

Following this, Sven drew as well. After having sacrificed a piece for a mating attack, he had to acknowledge that his opponent had more defensive resources than expected. Playing white, Sven bailed out by giving perpetual check.

Even Gerd cannot win every game and agreed to a threefold repitition at the beginning of the middlegame. In a King's Indian structure, Gerd's kingside attack had come to a halt, while his opponent threatened to invade through the backdoor on the queenside.

Hendrik's game at the top board turned out to be very interesting. First, he had sacrificed a pawn for an initiative that was so promising that it prompted his opponent Holger Nothnagel to counter with a likewise very strong exchange sacrifice. Eventually, a pair of bishops and a material advantage neutralized each other, resulting in a draw by repitition and a score of 2:2.

Already quite early into the match we saw Oliver on his way to a full point. After a creative and aggressive handling of the opening he had won a pawn which he held on to until the end of the game, winning it in a very safe manner for a score of 3:2.

I did not see much of Patrick's game. Patrick had played quite quickly and when I first looked at his board he was defending a worse endgame. For a moment during his opponent's time trouble it seemed like he might be able to save the draw. Unfortunately, however, his opponent kept his nerve and converted to a full point.

Tomislav, who had replaced Thomas for this match, played an unambitious opening against his nominally much weaker opponent. Nevertheless he was able to continuously pose threats, which eventually allowed him to first wreck his opponent's pawn structure and later convert his advantage in a knight endgame.

Finally, with the score at 4:3, only Christof 's game was still on. And it would still go on for a long time. For six hours his opponent tried to win the game, but due to a great defensive performance interspersed with creative moves Christof was able to hold the balance. When the last pawns were about to be exchanged, his opponent agreed to the draw, with Christof sealing the first team victory of the season.

The following matchday will lead us to Bad Homburg. Let's see if we are able to win away from home as well. As of now, it is going to be very difficult.

Nied 1 - Disaster in several acts

The report of the last round already predicted that the upcoming match against Bad Homburg was going to be a difficult one. With Gerd, not only the team captain but also the team's top scorer had to replaced.

However, before the start of the match it turned out that Bad Homburg had even greater worries in fielding their starters, such that Nied had reasons to be optimistic about the outcome of the match. But that optimism evaporated quickly when, after a quick draw by Daniel, the silence of the Albin-Göhring-Halle was disrupted by a sounding mobile phone. Tomislav had forgotten to switch off his phone and Bad Homburg did not have a choice but claiming the point by forfeit.

Not even the quick equalizer delivered by Patrick thanks to an interesting pawn sacrifice could restore the former optimism. Too bad already were the positions at the other boards. Hendrik had lost a pawn, Thomas played without a plan, Sven saw a passed pawn advancing closer and closer to his back rank and Christof had yielded the only open file to his opponent without compensation. Then the inevitable happened. Sven managed to stop the passed pawn but was mated instead. Christof allowed a royal check while trying to muddy the waters and Thomas first lost a pawn and then resigned when he believed to lose another one.

With the score now at 4,5-1,5, the top board of Bad Homburg cut short his attempts to convert his extra pawn, thus letting Hendrik off the hook with just a slap on his wrist. Our last remaining optimism was therefore about Oliver to make the best of a bad collective job. He declined a draw offer but then slowly but surely lost the thread, eventually having to resign as well on this textbook example of a bad hair day - "a pessimist is an optimist in possession of all the facts."

Nied is now in next-to-last place of the table and will attempt - be it pessimistically or optimistically - to score points again in the next round at home against Sfr. Neuberg 2.

Hessenliga - Nied 1 loses to Sfr. Neuberg 2

In the fifth round of the Hessenliga the first team was able to field a good line-up. Thomas Zöller passed on his place in the squad to our strong substitute Tomislav Vukelić. Unfortunately, success was again found to be missing.

Sven finished his game first. Playing white he managed to secure a slightly superior position against FM Norbert Heck but then acquiesced to his opponent's draw offer.

Tomislav played a quite solid opening but when his opponent stayed solid as well, the point was shared at this board too.

Gerd played the opening creatively, which led to an exciting fight against his young opponent. During its course, the opponent's king got stuck in the centre and eventually grilled by Gerd's pieces. A nice win for Gerd!

Patrick played solid game, in which he again achieved a considerable time advantage on the clock. The opponent was under pressure but defended circumspectly. Unfortunately Patrick then lost a pawn during the middlegame, which was soon accompagnied by a second one. When the opponent had negotiated his time trouble successfully, the first loss had to be accounted for.

Christof had drifted into a passive position in which the opposing Catalan bishop ruled the long diagonal while Christof had hung on dearly to his light-squared bishop - something had obviously gone wrong during the transition into the middlegame. Christof put up stiff resistance in a worse endgame for a long time but was eventually forced to surrender.

Oliver grabbed the initiative in a theoretical opening duel and was looking forward to a promising middlegame. The position was complex though, and unfortunately Oliver missed the correct follow-ups, ending up in an equal endgame. The fight went on for quite a while still, but eventually the point was shared.

Daniel mixed up a variation in the opening and was forced to settle for lower sights. He ended up in an seemingly inferior middlegame but defended very tenaciously. His opponent set out to squeeze the last drop out of the resulting endgame until Daniel, after six hours of play, claimed a threefold repetition, sealing the draw.

Hendrik played the opening inaccurately, allowing his opponent to take over the initiative. At a later point he managed to equalize but his oppenent still enjoyed an annoying initiative compensating his material deficit. During mutual time trouble Hendrik managed to turn the tables, but unfortunately, owing to the complexity of the position, he missed a possible win several times. Thus having ended up in a dead-drawn endgame, he tried everything but nevertheless had to accept the draw after 6,5 hours of play.

At the close a very disappointing 3,5:4,5 defeat had to be accounted for. We now simply must fight on and give our best, hoping for a change of fortunes in the remaining matches.

Nied 1 with fourth narrow defeat

The first team lost against SV Hofheim 2 by 3.5-4.5 - for the fourth time this season - and is now in acute danger of being relegated. We were able to field our first eight with an exciting match on the horizon, as Hofheim 2 were missing several starters. Nevertheless they started the match as the favourites.

Thomas was the first to finish his game. Playing black, he comfortably got out of the opening and than accepted his opponent's draw offer.

As for Christof, he appears to be a little bit jinxed. After he took a pawn - which was likely poisoned - he found himself caught in uncomfortable complications. His king had to stay uncastled and was exposed to the opponent's initiative. The opponent continued quite precisely, such that the first defeat had to be accounted for.

Patrick took on the strongest opponent and reached a quite solid middlegame position. Unfortunately he had to heed a chronic pawn weakness, which the opponent was not able to expoit directly. However, after some manoeuvering, he eventually managed to win the weak pawn, resulting in lost endgame that Patrick was forced to resign after a long fight.

Hendrik made it out of the opening comfortably. After dodging various difficulties, a sticky middlegame had been reached. With a locked pawn structure, neither player took any risks and consequently the point was shared.

Daniel was able to obtain a space advantage out of the opening, making it an easier game for him. Objectively though, the position was equal. Daniel continued to play circumspectly and eventually shared the point with his strong opponent.

Oliver played white and obtained an advantage, after his opponent missed a critical continuation in the opening. Skillful play then resulted in the win of material, but not without allowing the opponent some counterplay. Maybe a bit luckily, Oliver was able to extinguish this counterplay rather easily and score a full point.

In a theoretical battle, Sven had reached an exciting but likely equal middlegame position. He then committed an inaccuracy that allowed his opponent to develop an initiave, forcing Sven to defend. Under pressure, Sven then lost an exchange and ended up in a lost endgame.

Gerd started the game slowly as usual. The resulting middlegame then turned out to be quite exciting but likely equal. After various complications, Gerd was able to improve his position decisively and begin an attack. Successful negotiation of his opponent's all-out counter attack then led to an easily won endgame.

At the end of the day, Nied has to swallow a bitter 3.5-4.5 defeat once again. Now the first team sits in last place of the table and is down for the count - for the next round against Gießen we are now obliged to fight back.

Nied 1 - Too little to live, too much to die

For the 7th round of the season against SK Gießen, the first team was able to field its best line-up, while the guest were a little bit weakened. So we were favored to maybe score a victory again, but to no avail. The match ended in a hard-fought draw.

Gerd was the first to finish his game. He was under pressure and had to accept a threefold repitition. His opponent, who had the lower rating, was presumably content with the draw. But in the post-mortem we found some good ideas for Gerd to play on, although it would have been quite complicated and committing. What a pity!

Patrick was probably still at the blitz championship the day before, mentally. So he played practically every move within his increment, but somehow the quality fell by the wayside and we had to acknowledge a defeat.

Sven answered the creative play of his opponent with a pawn sacrifice. Afterwards he had a great initiative with a nice pair of bishops while the pawn structure narrowed down the opponent's piece play nicely. Finally he was able to attack the opponent's king in a well planned attack. Clean!

Daniel had played the opening properly and then tried to start a direct attack against the opponent's king in the middle game. Unfortunately this turned out to be a mistake. All of a sudden, his attack was non-existent, while he had to face a strong counter attack. So Daniel was forced to prove his strength again and held the ship on course to salvage a draw.

Tomislav had played the opening relatively calmly with White. The result was a complex middlegame with a lot of potential for piece play. After a long back and forth, the point was eventually split here as well.

Christof had started the opening relatively calmly. This resulted in a relatively dry middle game. Unfortunately one pawn was then lost in a combination. Christof chase after this pawn for the remainder of the game. He fought on stubbornly, but his opponent didn't slip up anymore.

Hendrik was able to reach a middlegame with mutual chances after the opening phase was over. He had gained a space advantage, but his opponent had the bishop pair and was quite safe. But after an inaccuracy of the opponent, Hendrik could take over the initiative and the game became more and more heated up with increasing time pressure. Unfortunately, he missed some good opportunities to enlarge his advantage. The result was an endgame which was probably won. But with so many options at his disposal, he missed the one to wrap up the game. After a lot of further trying, the point was finally split.

Oliver had passed the opening phase without any problems and was facing a tough middlegame phase. His opponent was probably satisfied with a draw and played relatively tamely. Oliver pushed hard, but missed a good opportunity to gain a decisive advantage. Unfortunately, a pawn was lost then after a miscalculation. Without question Oliver still had enough compensation. Later, after some manoeuvering, the opponent made a mistake and Oliver was able to win the exchange and also take over the initiative. In the end he managed to decide the game with a nice pawn breakthrough.

The result thus was a 4-4 against Gießen. Again, bad luck for us, but we took one team point. In two weeks against Fulda it will be all or nothing.
