After the winter break, Nied 3 unfortunately did not manage to secure an anticipated victory against the nominally slighly weaker guests from Steinbach (DWZ average: 1512 vs 1462). This let Nied 3 drop to the next-to-last rank of the table. A victory was out of reach in spite of the mobilization of the veterans Bernd Neudel and Dieter Rabe as substitute players.

Board 2: Distracted by his own mating attack, Volker did not pay sufficient attention to his opponent's threats and completely missed the loss of a bishop after the exchange of queens.

Board 6: Over its whole course, Kurt's game was even. In an equal position, draw was eventually agreed.

Board 3: Till could consider himself lucky that his opponent decided against winning a piece for fear a counterattack against his queen. Beside this incident, the game always remained close to even. Finally, a rook ending with several pawns was agreed drawn.

Board 4: Bjarne's opponent came out worse from an English opening. Bjarne was able to undermine his opponent's far-advanced centre and win a pawn on the queenside. Later, a mass exchange enabled him to pin the opposing knight to the edge of the board. However, after he eventually returned his extra pawn for more positional advantages, he found himself unable to convert his advantage to a full point.

Board 7: Bernd was contronted by a Closed Sicilian. After the exchange of several minor pieces, the position became dry and the game ended in a draw.

Board 8: Dieter was able to win a piece and routinely converted his material advanted into a win.

Board 1: Fritz had to resign at move 68 due to an unstoppable passed pawn.
