Nied 3 eked out a 5-3 victory against SC Sulzbach and thus scored two points in an important relegation battle. The team reached their set goal and will now hopefully be able to stay afloat until the end of the season. Fritz, Till, and Lam were able to win their games, while Volker, Bjarne, Kurt and Wolfgang contributed draws.

Bjarne at board 6 came out of the opening very well and was able to apply strong pressure. This variation of the Bishop Game leads to a white advantage in the centre and on the kingside. However, the combination of questionable strategical decisions and the opponent's locking of the position lead Bjarne to attempt to break through on the queenside. This eventually led to an equal endgame of three pawns and bishop each, and thus a draw was agreed.

At board 8, Wolfgang did not easily acquiesce to a draw in an equal position. According to the goal of playing as long as possible without ending up worse, he fought on until the endgame, which then ended in a clearly drawn position and secured half a point for the team.

Lams opponent at board 5 blundered an important centre pawn in the opening, which Lam skillfully conquered by a maneouvre of his knight forking the opponent's bishop. Following this Lam had more central control and obtained a dangerous - later even two connected passed pawns. Finally, the opponent tried a counter attack on Lam's king, which ended in himself getting mated instead.

Till at board 4 managed to blow open the centre by a pawn advance on the flank and suddenly obtained a dangerous passed pawn as well as an aggressively posted knight. The opponent sacrificed the exchange for that knight after which the passed pawn became unstoppable and queened. Being faced by two queens against his one, the opponent had enough and resigned.

As the time passed, Fritz's position at board improved continuously until he won a piece against two pawns in his opponent's time trouble. Following this, the opponent resigned in a hopeless position. The game turned out to have been another instance of the bonmot of "he who makes the next-to-last mistake wins the game" (Savielly G. Tartakower, *Feb 21st 1887, Russian Empire; †Feb 5th 1956, Paris, France).

Due to blunder, Volker at board 2 could not convert his advantage and the game ended drawn.

At board 7, Kurt fought for a long time and displayed a huge will to win. The players eventually played until their was absolutely nothing left to be tried before a draw was finally agreed.
