The first team lost against SV Hofheim 2 by 3.5-4.5 - for the fourth time this season - and is now in acute danger of being relegated. We were able to field our first eight with an exciting match on the horizon, as Hofheim 2 were missing several starters. Nevertheless they started the match as the favourites.
Thomas was the first to finish his game. Playing black, he comfortably got out of the opening and than accepted his opponent's draw offer.
As for Christof, he appears to be a little bit jinxed. After he took a pawn - which was likely poisoned - he found himself caught in uncomfortable complications. His king had to stay uncastled and was exposed to the opponent's initiative. The opponent continued quite precisely, such that the first defeat had to be accounted for.
Patrick took on the strongest opponent and reached a quite solid middlegame position. Unfortunately he had to heed a chronic pawn weakness, which the opponent was not able to expoit directly. However, after some manoeuvering, he eventually managed to win the weak pawn, resulting in lost endgame that Patrick was forced to resign after a long fight.
Hendrik made it out of the opening comfortably. After dodging various difficulties, a sticky middlegame had been reached. With a locked pawn structure, neither player took any risks and consequently the point was shared.
Daniel was able to obtain a space advantage out of the opening, making it an easier game for him. Objectively though, the position was equal. Daniel continued to play circumspectly and eventually shared the point with his strong opponent.
Oliver played white and obtained an advantage, after his opponent missed a critical continuation in the opening. Skillful play then resulted in the win of material, but not without allowing the opponent some counterplay. Maybe a bit luckily, Oliver was able to extinguish this counterplay rather easily and score a full point.
In a theoretical battle, Sven had reached an exciting but likely equal middlegame position. He then committed an inaccuracy that allowed his opponent to develop an initiave, forcing Sven to defend. Under pressure, Sven then lost an exchange and ended up in a lost endgame.
Gerd started the game slowly as usual. The resulting middlegame then turned out to be quite exciting but likely equal. After various complications, Gerd was able to improve his position decisively and begin an attack. Successful negotiation of his opponent's all-out counter attack then led to an easily won endgame.
At the end of the day, Nied has to swallow a bitter 3.5-4.5 defeat once again. Now the first team sits in last place of the table and is down for the count - for the next round against Gießen we are now obliged to fight back.
